What person in their right mind would Approve ANY of these things?

?$100,000 for socially conscious puppet shows in Minnesota

?$2 million to build a replica railroad tourist attraction in Carson City, Nevada

?$462,000 to purchase 22 concrete toilets for use in the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri

?$3.1 million to transform a canal barge into a floating museum that will travel the Erie Canal in New York

?$1.5 billion for a Carbon Capturing Contest

?$3.4 million to create an underground turtle tunnel, or eco-passage, in Lake Jackson, Florida.

?$1 million to study the health effects of environmentally friendly public housing on 300 people in Chicago.

?$983,952 for street beautification in Ann Arbor, Mich., including decorative lighting, trees, benches and bike paths

?$1 million for Portland, Ore., to replace 100 aging bike lockers and build a garage that would house 250 bicycles.

?$700,000 to Oregon crab fishermen to help recover lost crab post. You would think for that much money they could just go buy new ones.

?$300,000 for a GPS-equipped helicopter to hunt for radioactive rabbit droppings at the Hanford nuclear reservation in Washington state.

?$5 million to create a geothermal energy system for the Oak Ridge City Center shopping mall in Oak Ridge, Tenn. From TheHill.com, The main problem, is the fact the mall has been losing tenants for years and is mostly empty.”

?$9.38 million to renovate a century-old train depot in Lancaster County, Pa., that has not been used for three decades.?In rural Wisconsin, 37 little-used bridges are receiving $15.8 million in stimulus funds. According to the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel, “The 37 bridges average 568 vehicles a day.” Some of these bridges see less than ten cars a day.

?Montana received $2.2 million to install skylights in their state-run liquor warehouse.

?The $800,000 given to John Murtha Airport to repave a back runway. This airport services a whopping 20 passengers a day and has, over the past decade, already received millions in federal funds. Representative John Murtha treats this as his private airport and has spared no expense.

?$1 million was given to a Chicago dinner cruise company to “combat terrorism”

?The Coast Guard gets $572 million to create 1,235 new jobs. This comes to $460,000 per job.

?$30 million for a spring training baseball complex for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies and $11 million for Microsoft to build a bridge connecting its two headquarter campuses in Redmond, Wash., which are separated by a highway. Instead of taking our money, why isn’t Bill Gates helping with a solution?

?$1.15 million to install a guardrail for a persistently dry lake bed in Guymon, Okla.

?$2.5 million in stimulus checks sent to the deceased

?$6 million for a snow-making facility in Duluth, Minn.

?Every project gets its own $300 road sign claiming: “This project was paid for by stimulus money.”What person in their right mind would Approve ANY of these things?
Hopefully this will change now that we have a new House Speaker.
They are not in their right minds-that's why they are getting or have gotten voted out of office.

Now we have to remain vigilant and make sure that the ones that got in are better. What person in their right mind would Approve ANY of these things?
The 9.38 million to renovate a century-old train depot in Lancaster County, PA has several benefits:

1. It provides extra work for area contractors and construction firms

2. It provides more jobs in the 40,000 worker tourism business

3. It restores a historical landmark in Lancaster County, something we residents take very seriously, so much so that we denied Walmart from building a store in Lititz, PA.

We asked for this project and Republican Joe Pitts is our congressman. We will never vote a Democrat into office in Lancaster.

The tourism industry in PA brings in $2 billion annually, employs 40,000 people and brings in almost $500 million in extra tax revenue. Our convention center cost us $160 million. This project isn't even $10 million and will expand our extensive railroad museum tourist destinations.

We have recently being restoring old trains here in Lancaster and soon we will have even more train rides for those Thomas the Train Engine fans out there. We have a number of local businesses that manufacture plenty of hand crafted furniture and model train associated merchandise. Tourists like to shop in Lancaster when they visit, again, boosting our economy.

Normally, we would have issued a bond and permitted some private investor an opportunity to make money off of us. Instead, we keep the money we would have had to pay for the interest on the bond and put it to good use elsewhere.

We are a Republican controlled government here in Lancaster and we asked for this money. I can't speak for the rest on your list, which appears to be very old because it speaks as if John Murtha were still alive and "using" his airport.

I suppose if you spin the news to meet your political agenda, you can make it sound like anything. Enjoy the continued prosperity of our county adding to the economy as a whole one job at a time.
a) Someone who cares about the enviroment.

b) Someone who understands that stimulus packages are designed to stimulate the economy, and by choosing ethical projects such as some of these, that is exactly what they're doing - providing jobs just so you Americans can whine about the best government you've ever had. What person in their right mind would Approve ANY of these things?
Sounds like smarter way to throw away government money than by giving it just into the hands of bank managers and say "Have fun".

Of course, the stuff is pretty extreme... but for example the coast guard doesn't get the money for the jobs, but for doing their holy duty... and have the money to employ more people for this...I wouldn't throw this money into the same category as "private entertainment of politicians". Still, the airport you mention, for example has in reality 162 aircraft operations per day (one every eight minutes), and is thus a tiny bit more active as you claim...it also houses a few squadrons and wings of the military - and thus counts as "essential air service".

I would say, your source is not interested in a real investigation about the waste of taxes, but just blow up a few cases to rant about politicians. Making the real bad cases less bad that way.

A lot of the cases are actually normal government spendings - like museum railways and other cultural goods, that serve no direct economic purpose. If it would be instantly economic, a private company would do it. But still it could amplify tourism in the region without the fuss about many hotel owners having to cooperate for it.

If you think this is wasteful... in Germany we paid 250 million for a bridge, that will maybe be used in 2030. Maybe. It costs the tax payer 2.5 million now every year for maintenance until the rail road connection over the bridge is eventually used.
