Neighborhoods in Chicago?

I was wondering about the best neighborhoods to live in Chicago. I live in AZ, so, I really don't know the geography.

Not looking for houses, just an apartment. They area doesn't have to be anything fancy, but pretty safe for a single gal to live. Also hoping to not really need a car. It would be nice if there were places to eat, shop, and hang out fairly close by. As well as public transportation...which, from what I understand is not really a problem.

I apologize if this sounds stupid, but I know almost nothing about Chicago living.Neighborhoods in Chicago?
The River North/Old Town/Gold Coast areas that the others recommended are nice, but EXPENSIVE. Plus they're very populated and busy. Chicago has many lovely, safe neighborhoods with fun shops, restaurants and action, but are still quiet and safe.

Check out Lakeview, North Center, Ravenswood, and Lincoln Square. They're quieter, on the North Side, and farther from downtown, but still there's excellent public transit, beautiful parks, shopping coffee shops and food.Neighborhoods in Chicago?
You should look in the North Chicago (I live there ) part around Michicagn Av., Lake Shore, and the gold coast that is the best part of town to be in. South Side of Chicago would be the second best be careful where you are becuase Chicago has a good and bad part in all the sides, around south loop and hyde park would be the best I think. Then Avoid West Chicago even if you do find a good part it is surrouned by bad parts, this is where the notorious Henery Horner Homes and Cabrini Green used to be.

*Also don't call it Chi-Town and don't joke that it is called Windy City becuase of the Wind becuase it is about politics.Neighborhoods in Chicago?
Anything east of the Chicago River where it splits in the north, north of the Chicago River where it slplits in the south and South of Peterson is nice.
