here i am, over 50 years old, and i'm really scratching my head on this one. i do not recall any time in my life when the mayor of a city that was (is) under consideration to host the olympic games ever went to the olympic committee so close to when they would announce the "winning" city, and meanwhile, took along with him the leader of the entire COUNTRY (in this case, mr. obama).
do you know?
in the history of the olympic games (known for all kinds of political statements being made via injury and death to innocent athletes), has there been any leader of any country (city, like obama did most of his politicking in chicago) that accompanied a mayor or leader of the city under consideration to the committee's headquarters to influence its members in its (the city's and the country's) favor? doesn't that sound a little sneaky (on daley's part)?
if so, when did s/he do that? in the long history of the olympic games, which leaders of which cities and countries have literally gone to the members of the olympic committee in person to swing the games to their locale? why did they do that? when did they do it? were they effective?
right now, are leaders of madrid, spain (the king of spain), or any of the leaders (which ones?) of these cities (countries) shown below now in copenhagan vying to be chosen?:
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Tokyo, Japan
Madrid, Spain
and of course, Chicago, IL USA, the bookmaker's choice? yes! i was born and raised in chicago, the dirtiest, politically slimiest city in the united states for the past 60 years. it was voted no. 3 of 10 of the most miserable cities in america to live in, based on a survey run nationwide in the past 3 months that was like all the other surveys about our cities, but had added ONE QUALIFIER: the political atmosphere of the city in question.
and it is a damned miserable city. you would not realize that immediately if you came here as a tourist: our skyline is the best in the world. our people never lie when a tourist asks for directions. but richie daley "doesn't know" whenever evidence gets presented that his relatives who own companies got chicago contracts to earn money here, but who do not do that work, or when it's clearly shown to that patronage is the ONLY way to secure a city worker's job. and the taxes in this city! those olympians sure had bring a LOT of money with them!
chicago looks sweet, but if you knew of the problems that the olympians will face when here (thanks to daley and the city hall he rules over like a king) and the ramifications to the citizens of this city by hosting them, i do not think you'd want the games held here.
i think that richard m. daley has got to be THE most arrogant and hard-headed mayor in the world (the only thing on his plate for at least the past 12 months has been the 2016 olympics games being held in chicago, as though nothing else matters to we, the citizens of chicago who pay him, like our broken down public transportation system, the holes in our roads, and ever so much more...), taking THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES to accompany him to rub the right noses on the committee all so that the games get hosted in daley's town (he intends to rule for his whole life, like his father, and he hopes that a large statue will be erected of him, the mayor that brought the 2016 olympic games here, to that city where he decided that a swimmer swimming in the lake if there was no life guard on duty would be given a $500 fine--will the olympians be told this, to avoid them getting such a ticket?), where obama owns a house and where a lot of hokey, sneaky occurrences happened that involved obama personally.
so, please tell me:
1. what city leaders went in person (daley has used city funds--taxes--to travel to them, on top of such ill manners, and he used the city funds to get to the olympics held in beijing, too--that is how much power he has in this city) to the olympic committee to influence it to choose that city over and above its contenders?;
2. in what years did these officials go to them?;
3. were they successful?;
4. did any of them (who and when?) bring along the supreme leader of their whole COUNTRY (obama happens to be quite popular in europe these days, but he may lose it if he does not pay attention to the tasks that a president needs to, for instance, to straighten out the public health care plan well enough for it to be voted into law, since he said that he WILL put such a plan into effect during his term, and to figure out what to do about the war and al queada in afganistan after we had been so brutally attacked on 9-11-01and also, how to handle iran getting nuclear weapons) to add 'official nation-wide' approval to what the head of the city in question is trying to achieve all those years in the future?
i mean, this bugs me. why should the president, the leader of our country who has his whole desk full of issues to be resolved here|||I wonder what it cost you,two 747 jet transports for he and his wife and a bevy of cargo planes for the entourage.|||1.Why would an American not want the Olympics in America??
2.President Obama has roots in Chicago so what's wrong with him wanting the Olympics in his adopted home town??
3.What is wrong with the President wanting to bring money(tourists,media..etc) into an American city with the Olympics??|||Since the Salt Lake City scandal, the lobbying for the games has been much more open and intense.
According to CNN, the heads of all the countries were to be in Denmark for the selection.
Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia and Spanish President Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was planning to push the case for Madrid, according to the Madrid 2016 bid committee.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was expected to be joined by soccer legend and Brazilian native Pele as they advertise the benefits of a Rio Games.
Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, just two weeks into the job, also planned to be at the vote to demonstrate the government's full backing of the Tokyo bid, the bid committee said.
BTW -- the president works on AF1, the plane is equiped with offices and conferencing.
