"After days of controversy, President Obama delivered a 16 minute pep talk to the nation's school children Tuesday.
The address was aired in classrooms coast to coast.
"You can't drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You've got to work for it and train for it and learn for it," said the President.
The focus of his message was personal responsibility.
"Here in America, you write your own destiny. you make your own future," he said. "What's your contribution going to be? What problems are you going to solve?"
Conservative critics feared the event would be too political and didn't want a president playing parent.
In the end the speech wasn't exactly propaganda.
"I hope you'll all wash your hands a lot," said the president.
Many schools wrestled with the decision to show the speech and many didn't.
Though the president's words didn't seem to resonate with everyone, some found inspiration.
"I liked the fact that he took it out of his time to come talk to us as students and let us know what we need to start doing and let us know that it's not a game and we really need to step up," said one student.
"I鈥檓 going to take it more seriously because like he said that we are the, basically the next leaders," said another student.
It was a speech and a controversy turned into a civic lesson for America鈥檚 youth."
"School districts across the nation are deciding whether to air President Barack Obama's back-to-school speech Tuesday, after what was billed as a motivational talk sparked the latest political protest against the White House.
Mr. Obama plans to encourage children to achieve their educational goals in a televised speech from a Virginia high school at noon Tuesday, according to the White House. Lesson suggestions to accompany the speech at first encouraged students to write letters to themselves about ways in which they could "help the president," stirring an outcry among some conservatives, who said the assignment was an effort to politicize children.
The materials were quickly revised, to encourage students to "write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short-term and long-term education goals." But the flap has persisted, drawing many phone calls to schools by parents and casting an unusual cloud of controversy in school districts over the annual ritual of launching the new school year.
The reaction against the speech has caused most schools to make viewing of the speech optional. In Mr. Obama's home state of Illinois, more than a dozen school districts won't air the speech. Chicago public school officials are offering alternate activities for children who don't watch the speech, after getting a mixed reaction from parents.
"As the superintendent of schools, I am not comfortable with school district resources being used for this purpose," Mr. Kapp wrote."What do you think about parents being angry about Obama visiting schools?
There's no reason for parents to get so upset. hes telling the kids to be determined never give up you need an education in everything you you do so stay in school. That's what people tell kids anyway and it all true so it nothing negative so those parents need to actually listen to what to speech is about.

I think its foolish.
Im not a fan of Obama, but I see nothing wrong with telling kids to do well in school.
Those people sound a little nuts.
DONT LOOK!!!!!! HES MELTING YOUR EYEBALLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think it's stupid. Kids SHOULD stay in school, for their own benefit.
That's like parents getting upset from someone saying, "Kids, don't do drugs."What do you think about parents being angry about Obama visiting schools?
I believe if it wasn't for the uproar then it would have been more political. Especially when you look at the fact that they revised the suggested curriculum after the uproar. I also believed before today that it would ultimately be nothing. Either way it is advantage Obama. If there is no uproar then he can politicize his speech, and if there is an uproar he can focus the speech to make those that made noise look like paranoid loonies. I told my parents this weekend that he would do just what he did. If you look at some of his mentors their objective is to work their opponents into a frenzy making them look foolish, and less able to think clearly while they appear the level headed logical one. Obama is very calculating %26amp; strategic, and he is controlling the chess game now.
It is all about trust. Although the lesson plan was quickly revised, parents have lost their trust in the Administration.
Another point, parents should have a right to decide whether to let their children participate in activities outside of regular curriculum. That is why you need parents' permission to go on a field trip.
Some parents also prefer to watch the speech with their children. Just like some parents prefer to talk to their children about sex related topics instead of school.
