But from a Marxist viewpoint, an honest one, the old Soviet Union was a political and economic tragedy. Leon Trotsky, a strong Marxist leader who helped the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution to succeed, ended up by calling the USSR under Stalin "the revolution betrayed."

Fortunately, there are other alternatives to dog-eat-dog capitalism that don't involve Soviet-style Communism, which is a "cure" for capitalism that may be worse than the disease.

Because capitalism in many ways truly is a disease. But we need to cure it through democratic socialism, or through socialism laced with anarchist freedoms, or through what some unorthodox leftists have called "economic democracy" -- extending the same democratic principles that most people admire in politics to the operation of factories and offices, so that everyone who works for a living has a right to a certain amount of "self-government" on the job.

The old Soviet Communist system, in the name of freeing the "wage slaves" of capitalism, mostly succeeded in making them "wage slaves" of the Communist Party elite and the Soviet bureaucracy. All they did was exchange one set of masters for another, as George Orwell suggested in his famous satire "Animal Farm."

What we need instead of Soviet Communism, and also instead of a US economy and US politics that's grossly dominated by giant capitalist corporations, is a system of economic democracy in which when you go to work for a living each day, you still enjoy real freedom and democratic decision-making in the work place.

Your bad satire, though, is blurring that point and trying to make us choose between two bad alternatives, Soviet Communism and recession-era, corporate-dominated capitalism. Most sane Americans are going to say no to both of your options.
