I live in an apartment, but it's the whole floor of a coach house and there is a fenced in backyard. However, I still have very close neighbors and need a dog that won't bark too much!
I also need a dog that is somewhat small (but I don't like toy dogs)
I was thinking a pug, but I live in Chicago and the summers and winters are BRUTAL! I also want to be active and have my dog come on long walks with me, so I need a dog that doesn't tire or overheat easily.
I am okay with walking my dog 2-3 times a day but I don't want a dog that will be miserable inside the apartment.
So I need a dog that is moderately sized (it'd be really cool if he could fit inside a carrier and I could take him on public transit because I like to go to the beach and the suburbs but I don't have a car) needs a moderate amount of exercise, and is not aggressive (my roommate has a scardy cat)
What dogs are best for me?|||Maybe you should try fostering for awhile and see how you like it. Public transportation to the beach? And then what? You cannot take the dog into most stores, and many beaches do not allow them. No way to tell how it would get along with a cat that is already there. As many problems as you present, perhaps not such a good idea? If you do not like toy dogs, consider the weight of a dog in a carrier that you take with you and what if it is hot out? Or the dog has to go potty? Wow.|||ok so which is it? you want a small dog or a medium dog? A smaller dog is going to tire more easily than a medium sized dog, but a medium sized dog won't always fit in a carrier that you can lug around. All dogs bark, you can't change their nature. so if you don't want it to bark, you will have to train it not to. Any dog can also have a tendancy to be aggressive if not properly socialized. Do your research before getting a dog, it sounds like you have a lot to learn .|||Beagles, Miniature Pinschers…Shiba Inu…Jack Russell Terrier…
from http://www.allsmalldogbreeds.com/small-d…|||i live in chicago too.!:) anyways i was in almost the same situation as u.i got a miniature pincher(min pin) and they r soo cute and playful u should get one.look up pics of them online|||Yorkie, Poodle, Scottish terrior|||I know a great dog, a Whippet!
I have the same dog but it is crossed with a lab; she weighs about 38 pounds and is about 23 inches high, but most of that is the lab in her. Whippets weigh anywhere from 15 - 30 pounds and are 17 - 23 inches tall.
From what I've read they are a great apartment dogs because they are quiet and sleep for most of the day. They do need to be taken on walks a few times a day, or to the dog park to run free. They are a lot like a Greyhound but just smaller. Also if you wanted to do Agility this dog would be perfect for it.
The only problem with this dog is that they aren't really good with cold temperatures for a long time, but you could always buy a vest for it, like what they have horses wear.
I think a Border Collie or some sort of Terrier could work well too|||You confused me.
Here is a list off the top of my head.
English Bull dog; good apartment dogs, don't do well in hot or cold. Don't bark much and are lazy dogs.
Great Dane; Big dog, great apartment dog, short life, don't bark a lot.
Pug; (I have one) Lazy dogs, don't bark much.
Shih Tzu, needs monthly hair cuts and every day brushing, don't bark much, lazy dogs ... prefer to be a coach potato.
No dogs can really tolerate hot summers or cold winters. So basically as long as your not going to have them outside all day it should be fine.|||I will have to say get a pug, they can overheat and get cold fairly easy, I have a pug and he seams fine in the summer as long as I stop and give him time in the shade and bring water with us so he can have a drink, I live in Canada but believe it or not it does get hot here in the summers, my pig loves people he is quiet friendly loves walks, happy chilling at home if he has to, he's not a very good winter dog though he's kind of a wimp, I'd say pug best dogs ever|||It sounds like a Beagle may be the best bet,but there could be a few more that would suit you. Beagles are athletic, not too big and not too small, and very loving. Cold isn't too hard on them, neither is heat. They adapt easily. If socialized, they aren't generally aggressive. They can be vocal, like any good hound, so you may want to ask the current owners of the dog if he/she barks a lot.
I HIGHLY recommend a dog from a shelter, whether it is a mix or purebred. Mutts can also be great dogs, and you would be saving a life by adopting. Good luck, and have fun with your new pup.
