I am a single mother of a 6-yr old. I would like to move to NYC at the end of July. Currently we live in Chicago but after a very messy split combined with some other dramas I would like to make this change for me and my child. I hold a Bachelor's degree and do not mind getting any job at first while we settle. The problem is I have never been to NYC so I do not know what areas to look for housing. Elementary schools are also very important since my child will be starting 1st grade. I do not have a car so convenient public transportation is also important. Sure I know Manhattan is great but I am afraid I would not be able to afford something there. Currently I pay $1200 for a 1-bedroom place and I would like to find something cheaper (I know sounds funny) in NYC because I will not have a job right away. Can you please help me out and give me some pointers, specific addresses. I have to do this for myself and my child and start anew. I am drowning here.|||Try an Apt. in Queens, like around "Forest Hills" only 15 min to Manhattan by subway. "Bellrose" is nice, "Glen Oaks" is still a good place, "Bayside", "Whitestone", Forget about Manhattan for $1200 a month, unless you can find "Rent control" which is next to impossible ! I would get a job first, there are plenty here. All the worlds money goes through NYC everyday (stock market, Wall st, world banks etc.), so much so, that I can make a pretty good living just outside of NYC on Long Island, We earn a living here on the crumbs of money that fall off the sides of NYC onto Long Island (It's Manhattan's bedroom). Yes it's expensive to live here but, you also get "NY PAY", which is better than most of the rest of the country.|||$1,200 in Forest Hills? Only if you find an apartment in a private house, or in a run down building.
And it's not 15 minutes by subway. It's an hour to midtown during rush hour.

|||why would you want to raise a kid in NYC? move to the burbs. NJ or CT|||Not too realistic... NYC is VERY expensive, and even surrounding areas are getting way too overpriced. I was born and raised in and around NYC and would NEVER think of coming to live there, especially with a child, without a guaranteed job offer and secure housing. Go for a visit, which won't give you the best view of things, but at least give you an idea. NYC is a great city, but NOT the easiest place to make it... Good luck to you!|||Look in the boroughs or Jersey. You can find a one-bedroom for $1200 there. Be careful of broker fees though.|||sorry to hear of your situations but good luck , hey u out there give the lady a hand|||you think you are drowning there, wait until you hit that toilet you want to go to, nice place to visit but don't drag your critter up there. why don't you set your goals a little higher and try somewhere habitable. maybe Atlanta GA or Jacksonville fl. Pittsburgh or Philly, anywhere buy NYC. most every metropolitan city has public transportation. schools in NYC, fuggetaboudit. you may as well buy him a gun instead of books.
